Seeds of Africa held their biggest annual fundraiser yet in New York on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at Studio 450 (450 West 31st Street).
There, not only were guests treated to an Ethiopian coffee ceremony and an evening of hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, The Root’s Questlove stopped by for a special performance as DJ. Midway through the night, a charity auction was also held. Prizes included African souvenirs and a Giants football signed by Eli Manning.
In October 2014, Seeds of Africa launched The Dream School campaign, a two-year effort to raise $2.2 million in support of the New School production in Adama, Ethiopia. The Dream School will be an academy that meets the highest standards and prepares their students to succeed in high school, college and beyond. It will also house the Seeding Education and Sowing Community programs for 600 students from pre-kinder through 12th grade.
Seeds of Africa believe it takes a community to raise a child, and they plan on doing this by enabling students, empowering teachers, growing communities and working with families, all in the hopes that one day their model of education and community development in Adama can be utilized in other African communities as well.
Other guests included Seeds of Africa Executive Director Atti Worku, her brother and Operations Manager Yitagus Worku, and Associate Director of Development Hellina Tadesse. Currently comprised of 38 employees, ranging from teachers, a nurse, a counselor, community service providers and support staff, their team has offices in both the United States and Ethiopia.
