The Supima Design Competition runway show was back again for the Spring 2013 season at Lincoln Center. Supima, a luxury all American organization of pima cotton growers chose students from the Fashion Institute of Technology, Savannah College of Art and Design, Pratt Institute, and the Rhode Island School of Design to compete for a 10,000 cash dollar prize. Hosted by celerity stylist and fashion designer Rachel Zoe, the competition showcased eight talented designers.
Each designer made mini collections using all Supima fabrics such as shirting, denim, and knits, to create gorgeous evening gowns that was rich with texture and color. The students demonstrated great skill and techniques in their designs to create fresh and original ideas that floated down the runway. The panel of judges include Supima's own Buxton Midyette, fashion designer Tadashi Shoji, director of InStyle Cindy Weber-Cleary, Alexandra Wilkis Wilson of the Gilt Groupe, and Aslaug Magnusdottir of Moda Operandi. The winner was Kate Wilkoff from Pratt Institute with her five piece collection that focused on deconstruction rust and decay pertaining to architecture. The other seven finalist were Meredith Lyon of Pratt, Abigail Glass and Jacqueline Seifert of Rhode Island School of Design, Yvonne Luong and Kyle Phillip Edmund Pearson of the Fashion Institute of Technology, and Eduardo Labohemia Calvo and Natalia Yepes of Savannah College of Art and Design.
